This quote is one of 40 in a slideshow by the Telegraph and is attributed to Actress Lauren Bacall (1924-2014), who was married to Humphrey Bogart. It makes a good quip doesn’t it? It should, because as commenter, allthoughtswork, noted, it was written by a screenwriter, not thought up by Ms Bacall. This is just one more example of the cultural issue we seem to have of confusing the character with the actor. Nice catch, allthoughtswork.

Lauren Bacall didn’t say that. Schatze Page, the character she played in “How To Marry a Millionaire” had that line written for her.
What Lauren Bacall was actually quoted as saying was, “I put my career in second place throughout both my marriages and it suffered. I don’t regret it. You make choices. If you want a good marriage, you must pay attention to that. If you want to be independent, go ahead. You can’t have it all.”
Which is sad, really.

Yes, there are, thanks. Strange that they managed to attribute Austen’s quote correctly as spoken by a character but not Bacall’s. Ah, well.
